Football’s Quarrels and Feuds, Part Thirteen

1- Harald Schumacher/Gerd Strack and Rinus Michels, 1983
In the summer of 1983 FC Koln stars Harald Schuamcher and Gerd Strack were at odds with Dutch Manager Rinus Michels.
Schumacher went as far as saying that Michels could not develop nor train  young players.
Schumacher was fined by the Koln Management. The Management’s reasoning was that if they had fired Michels after Schumacher’s comments, no high profile manager would have ever come to Koln.

2- Marcel Desaily and Hristo Stoichkov, 1996
After France’s match vs. Bulgaria during the 1996 Euros (June 18, 1996, France 3-Bulgaria 1), French star Marcel Desailly complained that throughout the match Bulgarian star Hristo Stoichkov had hurled racial abuse at him and other players of African descent.
For his part, Stoichkov downplayed the incident and said that it was ‘normal’ behavior and all is forgotten at the end of the match.

4- Paul Gascoigne and Glenn Hoddle 1998
England Manager Glenn Hoddle disclosed a few months after the 1998 World Cup that Paul Gascoigne was so angry at the news of him being cut from the World Cup Finals squad, that he violently reacted and started wrecking and destroying Hoddle’s room. Others had to come and physically restrain the volatile Gascoigne.

5- George Weah and Paris St. Germain Management, 1995
A few months after his transfer to AC Milan from PSG in 1995, Liberian star George Weah accused his former club in their handling of the matter.
According to Weah, PSG Officials purposefully delayed negotiations in the hopes of raising his transfer cost.
He also stated that once he had told PSG that he wanted to leave, they started making things difficult for him.

They asked him to reimburse the furniture that the club had loaned him as well as airfare costs (According to Weah, he had an agreement with PSG that they would pay for his and Liberian teammates airfare to and from International matches, so that he could be present for League matches on time).
